James Webb Space Telescope sees first starlight from ancient quasars in groundbreaking discovery

Stars can no longer hide behind light to fuel supermassive black holes in the newborn universe.

With the help of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers have seen for the first time the starlight of two primitive galaxies that host supermassive black holes, or quasars. The findings could eventually help scientists better understand how supermassive black holes rapidly grow to masses equivalent to millions or billions of suns, and how they and their host galaxies evolve together.
